Mother & Child
Selected for the ING Discerning Eye Exhibition, 2025. Mall Galleries, London.
It is very hard to pin down exactly when or where I thought of this initially. But as soon as I did, I sketched it out, as you can see below. I must have thought of it as jewellery straight away, because I drew in some hallmarks, even though it later found its true form in wood.
What I do know is it felt absolutely right, and doable, from the first moment. Artists have works that resonate with others immediately, and this is one of those. I remain deeply proud and fond of it.
I have gently evolved the design and will shortly have it available as a Limited Edition in the American Walnut version you see here.
And whilst yes it is an ‘edition’, in effect each is unique, as the wood grain will be different on each one.
Made from American Walnut (completely free from international trade restrictions and endangered species listings), this is one of my very favourite artworks that has evolved from early drawings to this 50cm sculpture.
The Evolution of Mother & Child
Here is where it all started.
Initially I made a solid silver necklace for one of my daughters. (It carries my official hallmark, as authorised by the Assay Office in London).
I then had a CGI scaled version created, which you can read about in detail here
The real work began with this solid walnut sculpture. We very carefully selected the wood from a specialist supplier in Wiltshire, England.
