Commerzbank
Client: Commerzbank
The final image, shot on location on a disused UK airfield.
This is another shoot from a while back, but it's a good one for showing the range of problem solving a job like this actually needs, well before a camera ever comes out.
The concept was built around Commerzbank's yellow, worked as a single stroke of colour on an otherwise monochrome jet engine, one blade picked out in the brand's colour among two dozen identical grey ones. Simple as an idea, and genuinely difficult to make real.
The first problem was finding a plane. We needed a real aircraft, on the ground, that we could work with directly, and eventually sourced one at a disused airfield in the UK. The second was the sky. A shot like this lives or dies on clean, even light, so timing the day around the right weather mattered as much as anything we did with the engine itself.
The third problem was the logo itself. Commerzbank's mark needed to appear as one genuinely shaped fan blade, not a sticker or a retouch, so we had a model maker build a bespoke replacement blade assembly to match the engine's real fan, yellow blade included, sized and profiled to sit convincingly among the aircraft's own. My assistant at the time, Stavros, who could not do enough to help that day, delicately adjusted the piece directly against the real engine until it sat exactly right.
